Special Measures for Response to the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) (Updated on: July 6th, 2022)

Due to social conditions caused by the spread of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), in the entrance examination for the division of Civil and Earth Resources Engineering / Urban Management, Kyoto University Graduate School of Engineering, some examination subjects listed below will be conducted ONLINE, instead of face-to-face. Applicants do not have to come to the Katsura campus on exam days. Detailed information will be notified to each applicant from July 19.

Information of Entrance Examination conducted in Summer

Department of Civil and Earth Resources Engineering and Department of Urban Management, Kyoto University Graduate School of Engineering, hold a joint entrance examination for Master's Program and Doctoral Program.

Applicants can download the Guidelines for Applicants to the 2023 Master's Program and Doctoral Program. The information below are outlines of the Admission Guides for reference purposes only and are subject to change without notice; be sure to check the details in the Admission Guides.

Applicants should contact supervising professors of preferred classifications and discuss application with them in advance. The preferred classifications are corresponding to the laboratories listed in this page for Department of Civil and Earth Resources Engineering and this page for Department of Urban Management.

The Master's Program entrance examination is for applicants who wish to enroll in April 2023, and the Doctoral Program entrance examination is for applicants who wish to enroll in April 2023 or in October 2022

  1. Preferred Classification, Research Details
    The preferred classifications are corresponding to the laboratories listed in this page for Department of Civil and Earth Resources Engineering and this page for Department of Urban Management.

  2. Examination Type
    1) Ordinary examination, 2) Special examinations (Type I, Type II) for ext-faculty applicants and for full-time workers, and 3) Special examination for foreign applicants for our International Course.
  3. Examination Schedule
    August 25 (Thursday) and 26 (Friday), 2022.
  4. Examination Subjects and Scope of Examination
    1) Ordinary examination (total of 1,000 points)
    (a) English (200 points):
    Submission of a TOEFL, TOEIC or IELTS official score
    (b) Mathematics and Physics (mechanics) (200 points)
    Candidates must take the examination for mathematics and physics(mechanics).
    (c) Special subject (600 points)
    Select three subjects from the following seven subjects.
    (i) Structural Mechanics
    (ii) Hydraulics
    (iii) Soil Mechanics
    (iv) Systems Analysis for Planning and Management
    (v) Earth Resources Engineering

    Consult the supervising professor of your preferred classification for other examination types.

  5. Application Instructions
    In addition to the application forms included in the Admission Guide to the Master's Program, separate documents should also be submitted. Consult the supervising professor of your preferred classification for details.

  6. Program Selection
    1) Available programs 
    Three programs have been prepared for those who enroll in the Master's Program. Programs available for enrollment by those who pass the entrance examination for the examination category of Department of Civil and Earth Resources Engineering or Department of Urban Management are as follows.

    • Interdisciplinary Engineering Program
      (Laboratory of Applied Mechanics/ Laboratory of Human Security Engineering)
    • Advanced Engineering Course Program
      (Department of Civil and Earth Resources Engineering or Department of Urban Management)
    • Master's Program
      (Department of Civil and Earth Resources Engineering or Department of Urban Management)
    2) Program selection
    The program will be determined by our specific procedure using the statement of course selection.

Doctoral Program

  1. Preferred Classification, Research Details

  2. Examination Type
    1) Ordinary examination, 2) Special examination for full-time workers, 3) Special examination for PhD thesis draft, and 4) Special examination for foreign applicants on the Interdisciplinary Engineering Course Program for the Human Security Engineering.
  3. Examination Schedule
    August 22 (Monday) and 23 (Tuesday), 2022.
  4. Examination Subjects and Scope of Examination
    1) Ordinary examination (total of 1,000 points)
    (a) English (200 points):
    Submission of a TOEFL, TOEIC or IELTS official score
    (b) Interview Exam I (400 points)
    An oral examination of about 30 minutes is conducted concerning the applicant's basic scholastic ability, with emphasis on Master's Program research content or a field related to the applicant's work content.
    (c) Interview Exam II (400 points)
    The applicant makes an oral presentation (15 minutes or less) based on the separately submitted document, Research Experience and Study / Research Plan, and an oral examination (about 30 minutes, including the presentation) is conducted.  Use of a personal computer and a projector in the oral presentation is permitted.
    2) Special examination for full-time workers (total of 1,000 points)
    (a) Essay (500 points)
    An essay is assigned concerning the applicant's basic scholastic ability, with emphasis on Master's Program research content or a field related to the applicant's work content.
    (b) Interview Exam (500 points)
    The applicant makes an oral presentation (15 minutes or less) based on the separately submitted document, Research Experience and Study / Research Plan, and an oral examination (about 30 minutes, including the presentation) is conducted.  Use of a personal computer and a projector in the oral presentation is permitted.
    3) Special examination for PhD thesis draft (total of 1,000 points)
    (a) PhD thesis draft Exam (pass or not)
    (b) Interview Exam (1,000 points)
    The applicant makes an oral presentation (15 minutes or less) based on the separately submitted thesis draft, and an oral examination (about 30 minutes, including the presentation) is conducted.  Use of a personal computer and a projector in the oral presentation is permitted.
    4) Special examination for foreign applicants on the Interdisciplinary Engineering Course Program of the Human Security Engineering (total of 1,000 points) 
    (a) Oral Exam I (500 points) 
    An oral examination of about 30 minutes is conducted concerning the applicant's basic scholastic ability, with emphasis on Master's Program research content or a field related to the applicant's work content.
    (b) Oral Exam II (500 points) 
    The applicant makes an oral presentation (15 minutes or less) based on the separately submitted document, Research Experience and Study / Research Plan, and an oral examination (about 30 minutes, including the presentation) is conducted. Use of a personal computer and a projector in the oral presentation is permitted.
