Entrance Examination for the Graduate School (winter)

Information of Entrance Examination conducted in Winter

Department of Civil and Earth Resources Engineering and Department of Urban Management, Kyoto University Graduate School of Engineering, hold a joint entrance examination for Master's Program and Doctoral Program.

Applicants can download the Guidelines for Applicants to the 2014 Master Course Program and Doctor Course Program (in Japanese) and partial English translations of them. The information below are outlines of the Admission Guides for reference purposes only and are subject to change without notice; be sure to confirm the details in the Admission Guides.

Applicants should contact supervising professors of preferred classifications and discuss application how to with them in advance. The preferred classifications are corresponding to the laboratories listed in this page for Department of Civil and Earth Resources Engineering and this page for Department of Urban Management.

For the Master's and Doctoral Program entrance examination, applicants will have to take the examinations, which will be held in the Katsura Campus.

 

Important Information Concerning English Examination

Some applicants have to submit a TOEFL, TOEIC or IELTS score. Only a score certificate (Official Score Certificate) dated February 1, 2012 or later for Master’s Program entrance examination, February 1, 2011 or later for Doctoral Program entrance examination is valid.

In the case of TOEFL, only a TOEFL-iBT (internet-Based Test) or TOEFL-PBT (Paper-Based Test) score certificate (Official Score Report) is accepted.

In the case of TOEIC, only a score certificate (Official Score Certificate) for a TOEIC Open Test conducted in Japan or Korea is accepted.

Note that score certificates for group tests such as TOEFL-ITP and TOEIC-IP are invalid.

  4. Examination Subjects and Scope of Examination
    1) Entrance examination for International applicants (total of 1,000 points)
    (a) English (200 points):
    Submission of a TOEFL, TOEIC or IELTS official score
    (b) Interview Examination I (400 points)
    The Interview Examination will last approximately 15 minutes and will mainly focus on the applicant’s basic and specialized mathematical knowledge of one of the following seven fields. The fields correspond to the research that applicants intend to pursue if their application is successful.

    (5) Engineering Geology, Rock Engineering and Theory of Elasticity Physical and mechanical properties of rocks; Laboratory and in-situ testing of rock; Methods of geological survey; Hydraulic properties of rock mass; Rock mass improvement; Evaluation of slope stability; Stress, strain and displacement; Basic equations of linear elasticity; Stress function; Solution of two-dimensional elastic problem
    (6) Exploration Geophysics, Instrument Engineering, and Wave Engineering Theory of exploration geophysics; Theory of seismic surveys (with reflection and refraction methods) and electric/electromagnetic surveys; Data analysis of seismic exploration; Basics of instrumental measurements (force and displacement, movement and vibration, fluid, and temperature); Response function of sensors; Electrical circuits for instruments; Statistical analysis of measured data; Vibration and wave phenomena; Basic theory of elastic and electromagnetic waves; Reflection, refraction and diffraction
    (c) Interview Examination II (400 points)
    Applicants should prepare a presentation (approximately 10 minutes in length) on their graduation research or their current main research. The presentation may be given in either English or Japanese. The interview will be conducted after presentation (Total time: approximately 15 minutes, including the presentation).

1) Available programs
Three programs have been prepared for those who enroll in the Master's Program. Programs available for enrollment by those who pass the entrance examination for the examination category Department of Civil and Earth Resources Engineering or Department of Urban Management are as follows.

  • Advanced Engineering Course Program

Doctoral Program

  2. Examination Type
    1) Ordinary examination, 2) Special examination for full-time workers, 3) Special examination for PhD thesis draft, and 4) Special examination for foreign applicants on the Interdisciplinary Engineering Course Program of the Human Security Engineering.
  3. Examination Schedule
    February 17 (Monday) and 18 (Tuesday), 2014.
  4. Examination Subjects and Scope of Examination
    1) Ordinary examination (total of 1,000 points)
    (a) English (200 points):

    (b) Interview Exam I (400 points)
    An oral examination of about 30 minutes is conducted concerning the applicant's basic scholastic ability, with emphasis on Master's Program research content or a field related to the applicant's work content.
    (c) Interview Exam II (400 points)
    The applicant makes an oral presentation (15 minutes or less) based on the separately submitted document, Research Experience and Study / Research Plan, and an oral examination (about 30 minutes, including the presentation) is conducted. Use of a personal computer and a projector in the oral presentation is permitted.
    2) Special examination for full-time workers (total of 1,000 points)
    (a) Essay (500 points)
    An essay is assigned concerning the applicant's basic scholastic ability, with emphasis on Master's Program research content or a field related to the applicant's work content.
    (b) Interview Exam (500 points)
    The applicant makes an oral presentation (15 minutes or less) based on the separately submitted document, Research Experience and Study / Research Plan, and an oral examination (about 30 minutes, including the presentation) is conducted. Use of a personal computer and a projector in the oral presentation is permitted.
    3) Special examination for PhD thesis draft (total of 1,000 points)
    (a) PhD thesis draft Exam (pass or not)
    (b) Interview Exam (1,000 points)
    The applicant makes an oral presentation (15 minutes or less) based on the separately submitted thesis draft, and an oral examination (about 30 minutes, including the presentation) is conducted. Use of a personal computer and a projector in the oral presentation is permitted.
